Primary pupils get taste for undergraduate life on uni visit

PUPILS from Woodlands Primary School in Yate spent the day at the University of Bath as part of project designed to raise their aspirations towards further education.
Year 5 and 6 pupils began the morning with an introduction to engineering, competing with each other to build the tallest tower using only marshmallows and spaghetti. This was followed by a liquid nitrogen show and a hands-on experience with fossils and live snakes.
Parents and carers were also invited along to get involved with the sessions and to express their opinions on higher education. The university allayed parental concerns over the costs and accessibility of a university education.
During a tour of the campus, the children and their parents were treated to an impromptu street drama by the university students which demonstrated how life on campus could be fun as well as educational.
Rob Gibson, chief executive principal at The Ridings' Federation of Academies, which runs the primary school, said: "This was a wonderful opportunity for Year 5 and 6 pupils at The Ridings' Federation to access the facilities of our educational partner.
"The raising of aspirations is fundamental to the ethos of the federation and its academies. This is an exciting development for our primary pupils."
