Clifton Suspension Bridge to close for two evenings during Bristol International Balloon Fiesta

The Clifton Suspension Bridge will close for two evenings during this summer's Bristol International Balloon Fiesta at Ashton Court Estate.
Bridge master David Anderson said the city's historic landmark will close to all pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles during the two Nightglow events on Thursday, August 9, and Saturday, August 11.
"I urge people to plan ahead if they are attending the evening events at the fiesta on Thursday and Saturday," said Mr Anderson.
"The bridge will close to all pedestrians, cyclists and traffic at 6pm on both these evenings and it will remain closed for two hours after midnight."
Evening closures during the fiesta were first implemented eight years ago following concerns that the 148-year-old landmark could suffer structural stresses due to the sheer volume of pedestrian traffic.
"A crowd of pedestrians on the roadway of the bridge creates a far greater loading than normal car traffic and this could cause damage to the bridge and injury to its users," said Mr Anderson.
"As in previous years, we have agreed with Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council, Avon and Somerset Police and the event organisers that, to ensure the safety of the public and the bridge, the bridge should close for two nights.
"While it is safe for its normal use and volume of traffic – both vehicular and pedestrian – the Victorian bridge is old and must be treated with respect.
"The structure is checked and maintained constantly and we take advice from leading engineering consultants.
"They have advised us that, if certain loading conditions on the bridge might be exceeded, it could be at risk.
"Therefore, on those occasions, we will take the precaution of closing the bridge to traffic and pedestrians."
The bridge will be closed on Thursday, August 9, and Saturday, August 11, from 6pm until 2am.

Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva, Travis Browne and Invicta FC: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.27.12

Howdy. I'm Jim Genia. You might recognize me from such great literary works as "I, Armbar" and "Tito Ortiz's Head: Friend or Foe?" While Maggie Hendricks is covering some sort of athletic event called the "Olympics", I'll be filling in here at Cagewriter. Yes, it's a temp job, but please think of me as that really cool substitute teacher you had in high school, the one who said nothing when you disrupted class and set fire to the lab, yet did not hesitateto plant drugs in your locker and call the police. Heh. Anyway, here's some news to start your day:

  • Cesar Gracie, coach to the ultra-talented UFC top welterweight contender Nick Diaz, tweeted that there will be an announcement on Graciefighter regarding Diaz's career todayat 4:00 p.m. (PST). If you'll recall, Nick Diaz... yeesh. The big question mark these past few months has been whether Diaz has trulyretired or if he'll get in the cage once more. Therefore, we can expect Gracie's announcement to be one of the following: "Nick Diaz is not going to fight again", "Nick Diaz is going to fight again", and "Can someone tell Nick Diaz to call home? No one's heard from him in a while and everyone's pretty worried about him." Stay tuned!

  • According to ESPN, UFC middleweight champ and untouchable superstar Anderson Silva wants to fight UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre next.

Of much more interest to Silva are the blockbuster fights that can earn him big money as he nears the end of his career. St-Pierre v Silva undoubtedly would make the biggest Pay-Per-View in UFC history, but while Guimaraes says Silva wants the fight, he admits it has not been offered.

Of course Silva would like St. Pierre in a big-money superfightnext. Who would you rather fight? A welterweight champ whose knee could explode at any time, orUFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who sports an eleven-foot reachand hasmurdered everyone put in front of him? Silva is no dummy.

  • Just yesterday Travis Browne was sad. Ben Rothwell, who was to be his opponent at next week's UFC on FOX 4, fell prey to the injury bug, and Browne was without a dance partner. He was subsequently booted from the card. But it'sa new day, and with this new day comes thenews (courtesy of the good folks at MMAJunkie)that Browne will now headline UFC on FX 5 in October, facing off against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. Hooray! If you'll recall, Browne is big and dangerous and beats people silly - and being big and dangerous andbeating people sillyis good for main events.

  • There may be no offerings from the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator this weekend, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way to get your MMA fix. Invicta Fighting Championships, the all-female MMA promotion, will be having their second installment in Kansas City, KS, and the event will be broadcast for free on their website. Here's a video promo courtesy of MMAFighting. There are some extremely skilled and capable female MMA fighters out there, and a bunch of them are on Saturday night's card.

That's all for now. Now excuse me while I go plant drugs in your locker.

Oopsie babies? A third of U.S. births unintended, study finds

By MyHealthNewsDaily.com
More than one-third of U.S. births between 2006 and 2010 were the result of unintended pregnancies, a new government report says. That means the overall rate of unintended births has not changed much since 1982.
The findings showed that in total, 37.1 pe …

Mysterious 10-inch BlackBerry PlayBook appears in Vietnam

Mysterious 10inch BlackBerry PlayBook appears

The last we heard, all notions of a 10-inch PlayBook had been shelved, with rumors suggesting that RIM wanted to concentrate on its BB10 plans and next-gen smartphones instead. However, we've just received these images from Tinthe, showing off something that looks very much like the bigger BlackBerry slab. A handful of photos, comparing the tablet to the existing 7-incher and an iPad, were sent in by forum member quang3g, who appears to be involved in BlackBerry sales.

Looks-wise, the hardware's largely unchanged, aside from the bigger footprint and a screen ratio that appears closer to the iPad competition, rather than the widescreen shape that arrived on RIM's first tablet. According to the brief teardown shot, there's a potent 7,250 mAh battery housed in the still-slim 10-inch frame, while it's worth noting that the tablet also includes a SIM holder and cellular radio -- though there's not enough meat here to discern whether it deals in 4G or 3G (HSPA+) radio waves. While we wait for the official word on the existence (or cancellation) of this flavor of PlayBook, you can take a skeptical sideways glance at several more pictures of the tablet at the source below.
