The odds are your next PC will be an iPad
I'm a big fan of the iPad, for both personal enjoyment and work use. Though I can do a lot with it, I still need a PC (in my case, a Mac) for heavy-duty jobs or simply to command multiple screens as I multitask and move data among apps and services. So I was surprised this last week by how many people asked me if an iPad could be their next PC, as they contemplated not adopting Windows 8 when their current (usually Windows 7) PCs got too old.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC dock hands-on
And hey, what's a Windows 8 tablet without a docking station? Sure enough, Samsung was showing off a snazzy one tonight that turns your bright and beautiful ATIV Smart PC (which is a bit chunkier than its brother) into a notebook. The tablet slots into the top of the keyboard dock, with the Windows 8 button obscured slightly by the top of the dock. The device does look a fair amount like a netbook when it's firmly nestled inside. But we have to say, the quality of the dock doesn't match the beauty of the tablet itself, the plasticky bottom clashing with the brushed aluminum backing, particularly where the lip shows up slightly on the rear of the device.
When using the dock, you're likely going to spend most of your time in the classic UI -- and when you want to switch, you can just hit the button at the top of the dock to release the tablet from its docky prison. The buttons and trackpad feel a bit like a low-end netbook, and we had to do some fiddling to get that mouse across the desktop. We're hoping that Samsung will either release a slicker version or we'll be seeing something from a third-party manufacturer. In the meantime, the dock feels more like a second home for the tablet, best saved for those rare occasions when you'll need to do, say, some serious word processing.

Video: Volkswagen pretends its Chinese hover car is real
Filed under: Concept Cars, China, Videos, Volkswagen

Last year, Volkswagen China began its People's Car Project, which gathered crowdsourced concepts for future VWs. Among the three concepts chosen from the submissions - the Music Car, a Beetle wrapped in LEDs that change colors to match the driver's choice of music; the Smart Key that can track the status of your car; and a a zero-emissions, two-seat Hover Car - it was the latter that earned a four-minute video showcasing its imagined technology.
The video posted below is the same one that was released three months ago, but it's now been subtitled so that we can actually follow what's happening. Turns out it doesn't feature the woman who designed the Hover Car, Wang Jia, but her parents, who take their daughter's creation for a spin around Chengdu. We're disappointed that they didn't stop for kung-fu tea. Scroll down to have a look for yourselves.

Lexibook kids-tablet coming to the US, makes fifth-graders dream of an Aakash
French educational tech maker Lexibook is bringing its eponymous kiddy-tablet to the US from next month. It's not talking specs or price, but we're expecting it to be close to the Lexibook First currently available in Europe. The seven-inch slate packs a 600MHz processor, 256MB RAM, 4GB storage (expandable to 16GB with an microSD card), parental controls and 802.11 b/g WiFi. The FroYo-running device retails for £150 ($237) over the pond, but if the company tries something similar over here, we suspect people might plump for something a little more powerful, or less expensive, or both.

Watch ?All Access: Ronda Rousey? here
Check out the second episode of Showtime's "All Access: Ronda Rousey" right here. It's 23 minutes long, but well worth your time. There is some not safe for work language, so turn the volume down.
Things to watch out for:
1. How both women break into laughter after their face-off, and what they discuss next. I expect fighters to be intense during their weigh-in day faceoffs because it's so close to fight time. Breaking into laughter months in a staredown months before the fight is what I expect.
2. "It's brutal. She's an Olympian." Rousey has no problem throwing around Nick Diaz.
3. "I get to hit stuff and make noise."
4. Rousey's face when she sees her ESPN the Magazine cover, and the discussion with her mother. On the downside, she sees a video of her online exposed much more than she had agreed to.
5. Sarah Kaufman's friend doesn't know when she's fighting. Also, Victoria, BC, being insanely beautiful.
[Related: Kevin Iole: Sarah Kaufman lacks Ronda Rousey's glamour, but that won't matter]
6. Greg Jackson being as Greg Jackson as possible, yelling, "You're doing extremely well!" All coaches should rock grammar like Jackson.
7. Why you shouldn't ask Kaufman or her coach if she's working on armbar defense.
8. The narrator's voice. Without looking, who can identify that voice?
9. "Women being put in their place is part of what's wrong this world." Well said.
