A HUSBAND who attacked a policeman who was having an affair with his wife has been handed a suspended jail term.
Anthony Teagle beat up Anthony Morris when the police community support officer called at his home, Bristol Crown Court heard.
Mr Morris, based at Broadbury Road police station, suffered two black eyes, a broken arm and numerous cuts to his head, body and arms during the assault.
Teagle, 38, of Ilminster Avenue, Knowle West, pleaded guilty to causing Mr Morris actual bodily harm on February 19.
Judge Simon Darwall-Smith imposed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, with 18 months' supervision and 100 hours' unpaid work. Teagle was told to observe a three-month curfew and pay £150 court costs.
Earlier James King told magistrates: "Some years ago the victim had a relationship with this man's former wife. He was, as it were, warned off by this defendant and it seems the relationship ended."
Mr King said that last December Mr Morris met Vanessa Phelps again. She told him that she and her husband were getting a divorce and Mr Morris picked up the relationship with Ms Phelps.
It was when Mr Morris finished his shift at the police station and called round to see Ms Phelps, when Mr Teagle opened the door and assaulted him, the court was told.
In a statement Mr Morris said: "I thought he was going to speak to me but he threw a volley of punches, using both his hands, into my face.
"I recall falling to the floor and landing on my back. I attempted to crawl away from Tony.
"I crawled backwards and was in the back corner of the driveway near the road."
Mr Morris was treated at the Bristol Royal Infirmary for two swollen black eyes, cuts to his nose, neck, back, torso and head, and a broken right arm. Police then arrested Teagle and he was interviewed.
Mr King said his client had gone to the door with the intention of warning him off but became enraged and punched him in the head.
Katy Welch, defending, said Teagle only accepted he caused Mr Morris actual bodily harm on the basis that he repeatedly punched him.
