Google's Project Glass gets some more details

Google Glass

Google's Project Glass has been one of the most anticipated and hyped projects to come out of Google in quite some time. After a rather epic demo the company finally gave us a slightly deeper look at the wearable computer of our (supposed) future. Inside is the usual set of components you'd expect inside any mobile phone. There's a "powerful" CPU and "lots" of RAM (though, there was no mention of specifics) alongside an accelerometer, gyroscope and wireless radios for pulling in data. There's a mic for voice commands, a speaker and a camera, which can also be controlled by the touchpad that lines the side of the wearable device. All of those components sit off to one side, though Google says they're still well-balanced and actually lighter than some pairs of sunglasses. The tiny transparent display doesn't actually sit directly in front of your eye. It's slightly above your line of vision, so that it shouldn't interfere with your normal life.

Sergey Brin had three different prototypes on stage -- a light blue pair, a white pair and a black pair -- indicating that personalization and style were concerns. And that's a good thing since Glass is meant to be worn in public. Ultimately Google hopes that the project will be the next step in its quest to make information quickly and universally accessible. The ability to capture images from the first person perspective seems to be key to the device. In a new demo video, a new mother waxes about how hard it is to capture those perfect moments with her child. She "smiles at faces not devices" which makes sticking a D5 in the baby's face a bad idea.

If you're impatient and lucky enough to have been at IO (and live in the US), you can actually pre-order an Explorer Edition of the wearable computer for $1,500. The dev focused units will be shipping early next year. But, be warned, this is not a mass consumer item and will likely be more than a little rough around the edges.

?Multi-sensory dining? sizzles in China

by Julie Levin

As 10 mad scientists fly around a small laboratory space in a tizzy, putting the finishing touches on their latest creations, 10 equally anxious product testers wait in the adjacent room for the goods to be delivered.

At least, that?s how the scene might appear to an outsider at Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet in Shanghai (Ultraviolet in short), the latest of a handful of restaurants around the world using science and technology to transform a meal into a piece of theater.

Words of warning: a meal at the fusion restaurant lasts for four hours and consists of more courses than the PGA tour.

The cost per head is a not-insubstantial RMB 2,000 (US$314).

Vixens boss unhappy with Powell's GB selection

Bristol Academy boss Mark Sampson has expressed his astonishment after none of the Vixens' players were included in Great Britain's women's football squad for the Olympics.

GB boss Hope Powell – who also manages the England team – named the final squad of 18 yesterday and it is dominated by English players with only two from Scotland preventing a total Three Lions monopoly.

Controversially, Powell has included no Welsh players at all – with the snubbing of Wales skipper and Bristol midfielder Jess Fishlock arguably the biggest surprise.

The midfielder is Bristol's joint top-scorer this season with four goals and has turned in a string of impressive performances for the Vixens.

"We had three or four players we felt might have had a decent chance of being included in the squad and for none to make it is very disappointing – not only for the girls themselves but also for us as a club," said Sampson.

"But for Jess to be ignored is incredible. She didn't even make the last 35, never mind the final 18 – but if she was English I feel sure she'd be in their team, never mind their squad."

GB squad: Eniola Aluko, Anita Asante, Karen Bardsley, Sophie Bradley, Rachel Brown, Karen Carney, Ifeoma Dieke, Stephanie Houghton, Kim Little, Claire Rafferty, Alex Scott, Jill Scott, Kelly Smith, Casey Stoney, Fara Williams, Rachel Williams, Ellen White, Rachel Yankey. Reserves: Jess Clarke, Emma Higgins, Jane Ross, Dunia Susi.

NCAA champion wrestler Anthony Robles on MMA and his next challenges

Anthony Robles is used to overcoming challenges. The man was born with one leg, and still won a Division I NCAA wrestling championship. It's not surprising to hear that the challenge of MMA holds interest for the Arizona State grad and motivational speaker.

"It's a possibility. Right now, I'm focused on my speaking career, but when I'm in Arizona, I'm wrestling and I'm learning jiu-jitsu," Robles told Cagewriter. "I'm having fun with it. I would always get the fight question when I wrestled in college, I would say, well, if they ever make a 125-pound weight class in MMA, I'd be there. They just made it."

The UFC's recent addition of flyweights opens the door for Robles, but in the meantime, he has plenty on his plate. He is working on a book, movie rights and this week, he's in New York with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, a group that supports the endeavors of physically challenged athletes. He likes getting to meet other athletes like him because of the way they see each other.

"To ourselves, we're not disabled. We're not handicapped. We're just out there doing the best with what we have, and we're going to do everything we can to beat whoever comes across our paths. Just to be in the same room as these other competitors now, they get that mindset. We have that bond, of us showing the world what we're capable of."

"We are honored to feature Anthony Robles at our 2012 Celebration of Heroes, Heart and Hope," said Virginia Tinley, the executive director of CAF. "His ability to overcome the odds, and his incredible achievements, make him a role model for both challenged athletes and able-bodied athletes alike. His success serves as an inspiring example that there are no limits to what the next generation of challenged athletes can accomplish, and CAF is proud to provide the support that will allow them to pursue their dreams."

The Celebration of Heroes, Heart and Hope took place in New York on Wednesday evening. In addition to Robles, the event featured challenged athletes Haven Shepherd, U.S. Army Major Daniel Gade and honored Third Point CEO Daniel Loeb.
